Feb 25, 2009 not a holiday

Last year’s declaration of a “special non-working holiday” for Edsa I (Feb 25, 2008) brought expectations that this year’s Edsa I will be declared the same.

Even Presidents Aquino, Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada included February 25 in the list of official holidays during their terms to commemorate the event.

But Malacañang declared that EDSA People Power Revolution on Feb. 25, 2009 will not be a holiday. And I think it won’t be moved to Feb 23 either.

Fajardo said at a news briefing, “I think there are many long weekends and long holidays, that’s why Feb. 25 was not considered. But we have many activities commemorating Edsa I.”

  2. Christian Says:

The real reasons why EDSA I is not being considered as a Special Holiday is due to the fact that:

    1. PGMA is not in good terms with most if not all the main proponents of EDSA I namely, former Presidents Cory Aquino and FVR.

    2. The alleged murderers of former Senator Ninoy Aquino have been released from jail after serving more than 15 years in prison. Ninoy’s death is one of the reasons why we had EDSA I and as such, PGMA’s government would want to lessen the possibility of mass protests and rallies that may be organized during the holiday.

    3. I will accept the reasoning given by Malacanang regarding the number of long weekends that we’ll have this year. Seems fair enough..

    4. PGMA wants happy Businessmen.. She needs all the support she can get as the economy is about to crash as low as her ever dropping popularity.
