“Flying Car” Terrafugia Transition Takes Off
The Terrafugia Transition® achieved its first flight in secrecy, at 7:40 a.m at Plattsburgh International Airport last March 5th, 2009. But the “first flight” was only revealed at a press conference in Boston Museum of Science last March 18, 2009.
More popularly known as the “flying car”, the Transition® is a roadable aircraft designed to take off and land at local airports and drive on any road. The first Transition flight lasted only 37 seconds and covered about 3,000 feet and was piloted by Phil Meteer, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel.
Since The Transition® will be categorized as a Light Sport Aircraft, it will require a Sport Pilot license or higher to fly. Terrafugia, the company behind Transition®, offers this Transition®-specific course that entitles you to become a Sport Pilot in as little as 20 hours of flight time.
First customer delivery is anticipated to be in 2011. The estimated purchase price is US$194,000.
