Swine flu outbreak 2009
The 2009 swine flu outbreak, commonly known as Swine flu is different from the original Swine flu. Swine flu or Swine influenza refers to influenza caused by any strain of the influenza virus endemic in pigs (swine). These strains rarely are able to pass from human to human.
The current swine flu outbreak in humans is now known as Influenza A H1N1. It is an epidemic that originated from a new strain of Influenza virus. The new strain, as identified by United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a reassortment of four strains of influenza virus which are:
- 1 endemic in humans (Human Influenza)
- 1 endemic in birds (Avian Influenza)
- 2 endemic in pigs (Swine Influenza)
Outbreaks of the virus were first detected in Mexico, but it was not clinically identified as a new strain until April 24, 2009. The virus then became a flu pandemic due to the novelty of the influenza strain, its transmission from human to human, and the unusually high mortality rate in Mexico. These prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to change its pandemic alert phase to Phase 5, indicating “widespread human infection”.
Symptoms of Swine Flu in Humans
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Lack of appetite
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Coughing
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Prevention
- wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers
- when coughing, cough into a tissue and dispose immediately, then wash hands with soap and water.
- if the above symptoms are present, see the doctor immediately.

the use of face masks and boosting your immune system by taking lots of vitamin-C is still an effective way of preventing the spread of the Swine Flu virus.
