Bureau Of Customs Found These Fake Goods Worth Billions Inside Warehouses In Bulacan

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized assorted fake goods worth of billions in Guiguinto, Bulacan.

Nicanor Faeldon, BOC Commissioner, scrutinized the warehouses located inside the Richard Isagani Sandy (RIS) 5 Industrial Complex with agents of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS).

Owners of the said warehouses were William, Isagani, and Sandy, but their last names are unknown. They were given 15 days to present necessary documents or else the BOC will issue a Warrant of Seizure and Detention for the counterfeit products.

Among the fake products manufactured were candies, lubricants, cigarettes, motor oils, used clothes, medicines, insect repellent, deodorant, etc. Manufacturing machines and equipment were also discovered by the authorities.

Representatives from the Intellectual Property Manila Associates – Brand Protection Specialist found replicas of genuine brands such as Palmolive, Dove, Sunsilk, Creamsilk, Johnsons, Safeguard, Cetaphil, Gucci shoes, and Marlboro cigarettes.

Busted: Fake vegetables, tortillas, breast implants and more stuffed with drugs

Counterfeit goods are classified as prohibited under the Republic Act (RA) No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Aside from the violation, these counterfeit goods are also most likely unsafe or sub-standard which increase the risk of danger to health and safety of the consumers.

“This relentless effort of the Bureau of Customs to suppress the proliferation of fake products aims to protect the consumers, local manufacturers and the public at large,” Faeldon said.

In 2013, ABS-CBN News reported that counterfeiting and piracy remain widespread in the Philippines despite strong government campaigns and operations against it.

“Counterfeiting and piracy remain widespread because of the use of the Internet. Despite the government’s effort to curtail this, suspects continue to evade arrest and prosecution. So, there is really a need for close coordination with other agencies,” senior deputy state prosecutor Severino Gana said at the same event.

Intellectual Property Office chief Ricardo Blancaflor said the problem still exists because of public patronage of the popular brands which bear cheaper prices.

“This fight must be a whole-of-government approach, aside from asking our consumers not to patronize counterfeit goods,” Blancaflor said.
